On Meaningful Gifts: A Personal Guide to Holiday Gifting

One of the things that struck me when I moved to the US was the gifting culture during the holiday season. So gorgeous. So overwhelming. And people, for some reason, looked stressed out.

In Japan, gifting culture exists but mostly for formality. The items we gift are kind of set and known. It is called oseibo, and these selections have been made by whom, I am not certain, but with thoughtfulness and consideration. They will not spoil; they are universal and practical. But people receive the same gifts from many people. It is for formality, a greeting for the end of the year. When I was young and a bit rebellious, I found this ridiculous. I quietly hoped that culture would fade by the time I grew up.

Now, living in the US with lights strung up and holiday spirit in the air, I love the gifting culture here more than anything. To me, it feels warm and personal. It makes my heart warm when I think about what to give to certain people. I give to a very small group. Each gift is a message from me in present form. It is meaningful. People exchange kisses and hugs and this one gift, once a year. And it happens everywhere.

But here is what I do not like: gifts given out of obligation. “I have to do this because it is expected.” In that case, do not do it. Save the earth, save your energy, save the meaning.

What Makes a Gift Meaningful

I have thought about this a lot over the years, especially as Atelier Delphine approaches its fifteen year anniversary next year. My emotions have been high lately, looking back at everything I have created. Running this brand has been my personal healing journey, a story I will write about when the time is right.

For me, a meaningful gift has nothing to do with obligation and everything to do with these things:

Personal Thought

Not what is trending or what everyone else is buying, but what speaks to the specific person you are thinking of.

Quality over quantity

One beautiful thing that will last, that carries weight and intention, instead of many forgettable things.

Connection to the person

The gift should reflect that you truly see them, who they are, what they need, and what would bring them joy or comfort.

No Obligation Whatsoever

This is important to me. When I see somebody at a party, sometimes it is better without a gift. That way, people feel close to you naturally. Sometimes it is better with a gift. Read the person, read the gathering, and enjoy the moment. Personal thoughtfulness has to show whether there is a gift or no gift. The thought matters more than the object.

For Somebody Sweet and Gentle: The Brushed Beanie

This is not just a beanie for everybody. It has to be personal. Our Brushed Alpaca Beanie is made from alpaca youngster’s yarn. We wait for the young alpacas to shed their baby hair. Then we brush each one by hand, one by one. There is a huge difference between “washed to get the brushed look” and hand brushed by an artisan family, sometimes by me when I am in Peru.

I know the person who makes this. She is like my mom in Peru, an artisan and sweater explorer after so many years of making sweaters. She explores with me, and our passion is constant, never ceasing. I travel to Peru once a month. I use my Japanese essence more there. I time travel in my transit, finding a lot of inner peace in that journey.

This beanie is for someone who appreciates craftsmanship, someone who deserves softness and care. It is versatile, has a high end look, and uses some of the best yarns we source. Give this to someone you want to wrap in warmth.

For Someone You Are Close To: The Balloon Sleeve Sweater

This is our best seller and for good reason. It is a thoughtful holiday gift for a very close person or a mid-distance friend, or a family member. Why? It fits everybody. It will be worn every single day, literally, so that person will think of you every day.

Balloon Sleeve Sweater — physically light but very warm, with a knitted easy look. It sheds reasonably but does not require high maintenance. We have many colors, and we have proven this to be the best-selling piece year after year. This is a gift that says, I want you to feel comfortable, free, and thought of.

For the Artistic, One-of-a-Kind Friend: Archive Sale Items

I curated and organized my Archive Sale recently, which holds so many memories. Now, with the brand turning fifteen next year, my emotions are high. I have been looking at my creations and seeing how unique and special they are. I do not have any formal fashion education, but I am a very unique person with a strange, global upbringing and no boundaries.

These archive pieces, one-of-a-kind items from past collections, are for that friend who sees beauty in the unexpected, who appreciates artistic risk, who does not want what everyone else has. If you know someone like this, explore the archive and our current designer sale collection.

Our Alpaca Products Are My Personal Recommendations

Everything we make in alpaca comes from those monthly trips to Peru, from collaboration and care, from hand brushing and waiting for the right materials. These pieces carry intention. They are luxury gifts, but more than that, they are sustainable, thoughtful presents made by people I know and respect.

How to Approach Holiday Gifting Thoughtfully

I like curling up, wrapped in softness. I sometimes stay home and skip parties entirely, but I send gifts. I love visiting homes lit up with holiday lights. I become like a kid again. I reflect on my year. I reflect on the people I love.

My invitation to you this season: give only when it feels right. Give with thought. Give quality over quantity. Give to connect, not to check a box.

If you are looking for meaningful luxury gifts, pieces made with care, designed to last, and created with intention, I hope you will explore what we have made. Not because you have to, but because something speaks to you or to someone you love.
