Desert as Muse

Notes from the founder:

The desert has a way of slowing things down. It’s quiet, open, and full of light—perfect for a weekend away or a moment to reset.

Atelier Delphine was born from a love of slowness—of soft textures, earthy palettes, and moments of stillness. Over the past few seasons, I’ve returned often to California’s high desert, where the land feels expansive and time stretches gently. The desert has become both muse and medicine for me: a place to unplug, ground down, and reconnect with a quieter rhythm.

Whether you’re seeking a weekend reset, creative inspiration, or a peaceful retreat away from city life, these desert homes—each one I’ve personally stayed in—offer a perfect invitation.

FOLLY – Twentynine Palms, California

An Off-Grid Desert Escape into Desert Stillness

Folly is not simply a place to stay—it’s a gentle invitation to experience how design and nature can exist together in serene harmony. Crafted by architect Malek Alqadi, this quiet desert refuge mirrors the raw, unfiltered beauty of Joshua Tree, blending seamless indoor-outdoor living with a mindful, off-grid ethos.

Here, mornings unfold slowly, the sky stretches wide and endless, and each moment encourages deep presence. The smaller open-air bedroom frames the mountains like a living painting, with a rooftop deck perfect for lingering under the stars. Below, a pared-back indoor bedroom offers a calm retreat as night descends.

Every detail—from the clean lines to the natural materials—feels deliberate, poetic, and softly spoken. Folly is an escape for those who crave stillness, simplicity, and a soulful disconnection from the everyday.

Ideal for stargazers, design seekers, and anyone longing to pause and breathe in the quiet.

A-Z West House - Joshua Tree, California

An Artistic Sanctuary for the Soul

There’s something deeply humbling about staying at the A-Z West House by Homestead Modern—a place where art, life, and nature flow into one another with gentle grace. Once the home of the visionary artist Andrea Zittel, this retreat sits quietly on an 80-acre desert compound just steps from the wild beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.

Here, every detail whispers intention. The sculptural furniture, the thoughtful layouts, even the way time seems to slow—everything invites you into a slower rhythm, a deeper presence. It’s not just a home; it’s a living, breathing work of art crafted to nurture creativity and reflection.

For anyone who seeks a space to pause, to listen, and to reconnect with what truly matters, A-Z West offers a rare sanctuary—where the desert’s vastness meets the intimate beauty of intentional living.

Perfect for soulful creatives, quiet seekers, and those drawn to the poetry of simple, mindful design.

Mia Riad - Yucca Valley, California

Mia Riad holds a special place in my heart. Every time I step onto its quiet acres in Yucca Valley, I feel like I’m entering a peaceful sanctuary made just for slowing down and breathing deeply. As someone who’s always been drawn to the warmth and richness of Moroccan design, I love how the bold arches and handmade tiles here create a soft, soulful contrast to the wide-open California desert.

I often find myself lingering by the saltwater pool, soaking in the sun while the desert breeze brushes past. The sun-drenched patios are perfect for morning tea or quiet journaling, and when night falls, I love wrapping up in a cozy blanket under the stars. It's a nice reminder of how vast and beautiful this world really is.

Inside, the home feels like a true extension of the landscape—clay-toned walls glowing in the warm light, textures that feel grounding, and spaces designed for intentional, gentle living. I have a deep appreciation for the thoughtful details everywhere. Mia Riad feels like a quiet refuge where I can reset creatively and reconnect with what matters most.

If you’re someone who cherishes design that tells a story and a place that invites you to slow down, this is a desert escape that will quietly inspire and soothe your soul.

Beyond the homes themselves, the high desert is full of creative energy. Many artists have left the city behind for the high desert—choosing space, silence, and slower living. It’s something we deeply relate to at Atelier Delphine: the choice to live and create in alignment with natural rhythms.

Summer is approaching and if you're looking for a staycation pack light, bring a sketchbook, and let the desert set the pace. These California desert Airbnbs are ideal for solo reflection, creative renewal, or quiet weekends with a partner or friend.

Whether you’re inspired by minimal design, organic textures, or just need space to exhale, these spaces invite presence.
